Steve Fanara begins his third year at Vandegrift as an assistant football and track coach. He comes to Austin from Brownwood, TX where he has spent the last 12 years in a variety of coaching roles including assistant positions at Early High School, Southeastern Oklahoma State University and Brownwood High School. Fanara originally came to Texas in 2005 as the defensive coordinator at Howard Payne University and later served as the head coach from 2008-2011.Prior to living in Brownwood, Fanara spent the 2004 season as the head coach at 6A Oakville High School in St. Louis, Missouri. Fanara has been a head high school coach for seven years with stops at Ruskin, Warrensburg and DeSoto High Schools in Missouri. Fanara, who will be entering his 30th year in coaching, has also spent 13 years at the collegiate level with Mid-America Nazarene, Olivet Nazarene, Southwest Baptist, Southeastern Oklahoma and The United States Military Academy Prep School. He has served as the recruiting coordinator at two schools and has held both offensive and defensive coordinator titles.
Fanara earned his degree at Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, Missouri in 1988. He played for two seasons before beginning his coaching career as a student assistant. He also holds a Masters degree from Mid America Nazarene University. Steve has been married to his wife Lesley for 24 years and they have three children, Jordan-28, Lauren-22, and Grant-19.
