Vandegrift Varsity Vipers are 5-0 Beating Vista Ridge 21-12

Vandegrift 21  Visa Ridge 12

Last Friday night was a clash of two 4-0 LISD teams.  Vista Ridge was looking to gain respect as a playoff contender in District 13 while Vandegrift was looking to stay undefeated in district action.

The Vipers opened the game with a 10 play, 68 yard drive culminating in a 24 yard Field Goal by Charlie Fournier.  The Rangers opened their first possession at the 27 yard line.  They methodically marched down to the Viper 1 yard line.  The Rangers had first and goal at the one yard line and were held without a score highlighted by a key stop on 3rd down by  CB Logan Arnold and Safety Tyler Mongauzy.  The Vipers leveraged the huge shift in momentum by driving 99 yards for a touchdown on a RB Bowen Lewis 49 yard scamper to make the score 10-0 Vandegrift with :22 seconds left in the first quarter.

On the first drive to start the 2nd quarter, the Vipers forced the Rangers to punt after 5 plays.  The ensuing play saw the ball snapped over Vista Ridge’s Punter’s head.  The Punter recovered the ball at the 5 yard line where he attempted to punt the ball but was stuffed by JJ Parker.  One play later, RB Ryan Sheppard pounded the ball into the end zone from 5 yards out marking Sheppard’s first career Varsity TD.  The Vipers widened their lead to 17-0 with 10:17 left in the first half.  Later in the 2nd quarter, on a 3rd and 3, DE Greyson Ratcliff stripped the Ranger ball carrier and the fumble was recovered by Safety Kaleb Lewis.  Nine plays later, QB Dru Dawson hit WR Trey Mongauzy with a perfect pass for 14 yards and a Viper TD running the Viper lead that they would take into halftime 24-0.

The Rangers opened the second half with a 6 play drive and were forced to punt by the stout Viper D.  This time, the long snapper for VR delivered the punt on target but the Punter muffed the catch and was immediately brought down by DE Matthew Graham at the VR 25 yard line.  4 plays later, Dawson hit Trey Mongauzy on an almost identical pass from the 1st half for an 18 yard Viper TD.  With 7:19 left in the 3rd quarter, the Vipers now led 31-0 and all but put the game away.  For the rest of the game, the Vipers ran their clock control offense and the final score was Vandegrift 31 and Vista Ridge 12.  The Vipers are now 5-0 on the season, 3-0 in District and have run their record in District 13 to 11-0.

Game Notes – Bowen Lewis ran for 178 yards in 24 carries.  Dru Dawson threw for 2 TD’s and ran for 50 yards on 6 carries.  The defense was led by Jax McCauley with 18 tackles, 2 passes defensed and a sack.  Logan Arnold tallied 15 tackles and 2 passes defensed.  Zack Gillcrest had 13 tackles and a fumble recovery.  JJ Parker had 11 tackles and 2 sacks.  Tyler Mongauzy had 9 tackles.  Ryan Arnold had 7 tackles, 2 passes defensed and a forced fumble.  Wyatt Breckenridge had 7 tackles.  Matthew Graham with 2 sacks and Joseph Clark with a sack.  With injuries to Matthew Lee and Brady Wootton on the OL, Jack Gullett filled in admirably in his first Varsity action.  Also getting some time on the OL with his first Varsity action was Carson Beck.
