Undefeated Vandegrift Varsity Beats Westwood 42 to 17

The Vandegrift Vipers beat the Westwood Warriors 42-17 last Friday.  The Vipers are now 8-0 and 6-0 in District 13 and are the only remaining unbeaten team in the district.  The Vipers win over the Warriors was their 14 straight District 13 win.  The Vipers have now won 18 straight regular season games. With the win, the Vipers clinched a playoff spot.

The Vipers struck first blood in the opening quarter on a RB Bowen Lewis 23 yard TD run.  With 2 minutes remaining in the 1st quarter, the Vipers scored again this time on a 15 yard TD pass from QB Dru Dawson to WR Blake Youngblood.  The TD was the Sophomore Youngblood’s first Varsity TD.  The Vipers ended the 1st quarter with a 14-0 lead.  The Warriors got on the board in the 2nd quarter with a 23 yard FG to close the deficit to 14-3.  After a Viper punt, the Warriors drove 80 yards and scored on a 4 yard TD pass.  With under a minute left in the opening quarter, the score was now 14-10.  With 36 seconds left in the first half, the Vipers rolled the dice and ran the ball.  After a first down rush and a time out, the Vipers chose to run it again and Bowen Lewis took it to the house from 52 yards out.  At the end of the first half it was Vandegrift 21 and Westwood 10.

After stopping the Warriors on the opening drive of the second half, the Vipers extended their lead to 28-10 on a 9 yard TD run by Dru Dawson.  The Vipers D made another stop on the Warriors next series.  The Viper O continued their clock control offense and on their 14th straight running play of the 2nd half, the Vipers built their lead to 35-10 on a Bowen Lewis 6 yard TD run, his 3rd TD of the game.  The Warriors finally struck 2nd half pay dirt on their next series.  The Warriors drove 75 yards and scored on a 24 yard TD pass to bring the 4th quarter score to 35-14.  On the Vipers next drive, faced with a 4th and 1, the Vipers opened up their play book and attempted their only pass in the 2nd half resulting in a 42 yard TD pass from Dru Dawson to WR Trey Mongauzy.  The Mongauzy TD resulted in the final score of the evening and a Viper victory 42-17.

Game Notes – Bowen Lewis once again paced the offense with 20 rushes for 184 yards and 3 TD’s.  Dru Dawson only had 12 pass attempts but made the most of them by completing 7 for 97 yards and 2 TD’s.  Trey Mongauzy led the WR’s with 4 receptions for 59 yards and a TD.  Blake Youngblood had 3 receptions for 38 yards and a TD.  On Defense, tackles leaders were Jax McCauley with 21, Zack Gillcrist with 18, Logan Arnold with 13 and Ty Jordan with 10.  Jordan had a very nice game filling in for the injured JJ Parker.  Kaleb Lewis, Ryan Arnold, Gillcrist, Joseph Clark and Matthew Graham all had a TFL.  McCauley had 2 sacks and Jordan and Gillcrist each had one.  #TWO19 #NextManUp
