The shorthanded Leander Lions fought valiantly, but were no match for the Vipers JV Silver team.
The rout started early. On the Lions first possession DB Rhett Litzau #18 scooped up the punter’s muffed snap and raced 13 yards for a TD. Litzau has multiple defensive touchdowns this season, and had two in this game. Alvaro Barbosa #70 tacked on the 1-point conversion kick.
On their next possession the Vipers moved quickly down the field on runs by RB Cayden Bourque #28 and catches by WR Slater Swartwood #9 from QB Tyler Hubbard #11. Bourque scored on a 8-yard run left. Hubbard hit WR Cole Chartier #13 in the right flat to complete the 2-point conversion. Vipers 15, Lions 0.
The Lions then mounted a steady drive which reached the Viper 2-yard line. They could not convert and the Vipers took over in the shadow of their own end zone, but Bourque was tackled for a Lion safety. These would be the Lions’ only points for the day.
Hubbard was then intercepted by the Lions defense, but Viper CB Ford Boenig #15 returned the favor, and returned his interception for a Viper pick-six TD.
Next up to score was defensive tackle Zack Sarantakes #77, who trapped the Lions QB in the Viper end zone for a safety.
RB Bourque then broke a winding 39-yard touchdown run, and also ran in the 2-point conversion. Later Bourque scampered right for an apparent 6-yard score. But the Vipers were caught holding on the play. Just two plays later, though, Bourque bolted 4 yards up the middle for a TD that stuck. Barbosa’s conversion kick was good. Vipers 38, Lions 2.
The Vipers added another TD pass from Hubbard to Swartwood. Finally Litzau made a nifty one-handed interception pick-six for the Viper’s last TD. Barbosa added the extra point on both scores.
Final, Vipers 52, Lions 2.
The JV Silver teams will wrap up the season November 7th against the Cedar Park A-team, but have already secured 2nd place in district.
