Vandegrift JV Silver Prevails Over Round Rock – 35-22

Vandegrift JV Silver overcame a tough challenge from the Round Rock Dragons, prevailing 35-22.

The Vipers struck first with a twisting 3-yard TD run by running back Cayden Bourque #28, aided by crisp overall blocking including a nice lead block by H-back Will Province #45.  Quarterback Tyler Hubbard #11 then hit receiver Cole Chartier #13 for the 2-point conversion.

The Dragons responded with a long drive, but the Vipers held them to a turnover on downs.   Our heroes then marched the length of the field, and fullback Jahvien Freeman #20 bulled his way in for a touchdown.  Vipers 14, Dragons 7.

After the ensuing kickoff, the Dragons struck quickly with a 66-yard pass for a touchdown.

Then, on third and 7 from the Viper 48, Hubbard hit receiver Slater Swartwood on a 52-yard seam route touchdown.  Vipers 20, Dragons 7.

Again the Dragons struck back quickly, returning the next kickoff for a touchdown.  Converting a two-point try raised the score to Vipers 20, Dragons 15.

The Dragons had the momentum at the start of the second half and forced a Viper punt.  The game had reached its turning point. If the Dragons scored the game could have easily gotten away from the Vipers.  But a Dragon running back bobbled a pitch and Vandegrift defensive end Dom Genovisi #53 neatly caught the fumble in the air and rumbled for a 30-yard touchdown.  On the 2-point conversion try, the Vipers then pulled off a nifty flea flicker play. Hubbard handed to Bourque up the middle, but Bourque turned and flipped the ball back to Hubbard, who then hit Swartwood in the middle of the endzone. Vipers 28, Dragons 15.

On the next Vipers possession, Hubbard hit the prolific Swartwood for a 30-yard right sideline touchdown.  Kicker Alvaro Barbosa #70 tacked on the conversion.  Vipers 35, Dragons 15.

The Dragons added a late touchdown.  Viper running back Bourque excited the crowd with a blazing 45-yard touchdown run, but the play was called back due to a holding penalty.  Final score, Vipers 35, Dragons 22.

Next, the JV Silver Vipers go on the road to San Antonio to take on Cibolo Steele.  Make the trip, arrive early, yell loud!
